Practical Tips for Writing with AI
Get more from AI without adding to the noise
AI is changing the way people write.
It sounds a bit worrying when I put it like that. I’m a big believer in “writing is thinking”, so I’m sceptical about fully outsourcing something so important. But I do think we’re at the point where, if you write anything for work, it’s worth exploring how AI can help.
I mean that broadly. Maybe the bigger stuff like essays or social posts, or maybe just your emails and your Slack messages. Even if you’re a strong writer, there’s value in having something to spar with.
A lot of it comes down to how you use AI. Lean on it without intention and you just add to the noise. (I’ve written before about The Nonsense Machine, and how we don’t want to be part of that…) Use it with care and it’ll give you more time to think, and sharpen what you were trying to say in the first place.
So here are the practical things I’ve learned about writing with AI. And “with” is the crucial word. This isn’t a job to fully outsource, especially for a product marketer, whose role is increasingly about setting the bar for quality thinking and content across the business.
